How to Plan a New Year Marketing Campaign That Actually Works

Ah, January. Every single year, like clockwork, people wake up with a sudden surge of motivation to take better care of themselves. Whether it’s booking a session with a personal trainer, trying a local yoga class, or finally getting around to that massage or therapy appointment they’ve put off for months, the demand is huge.

For wellness business owners, the start of the year usually promises a wave of potential new clients. But without a clear plan, this potential quickly slips away. Waiting until Boxing Day to draft ideas and sending out a single New Year’s Day post often leaves your schedule unexpectedly empty come February.

Setting aside time in November to prepare early makes a world of difference.

1. Define Primary and Retention Goals

We see it every year. A packed diary in the first week of January feels brilliant, then by February the bookings have quietly thinned out. The campaign looked like a success, yet much of the time and energy that went into it never paid off.

Shifting your strategy toward two complementary targets, attracting new clients while keeping them engaged through spring, fundamentally transforms your January campaign. Prioritising ongoing retention alongside the launch phase allows you to refine your core services and customer care, driving much stronger results.

2. Speak to One Person, Not the Whole Town

“Anyone who wants to be healthier” feels like a big, generous audience. In reality, it’s so broad that your message ends up sounding like everyone else’s, and it gets lost in a very busy January feed.

Businesses that do well in January tend to know exactly who they’re talking to and, just as importantly, what that person hopes for. It’s rarely a total life overhaul. YouGov found that only around 1 in 5 Britons set a resolution for 2026. Most people aren’t chasing a “new me”. They want a bit more energy, a calmer mind, or an hour that’s just for them.

That’s why “New Year, New You” so often misses the mark. It can feel like pressure to the very people who’d benefit most. In some sectors, it can also nudge you towards claims the advertising rules don’t allow. Finding the right words for your profession is one of the things we’ll work on together in the workshop.

3. Start Your Campaign BEFORE January Hits

Here’s something I see every year: the first post of the campaign goes out on 1st January. By then, lots of your future clients have already made up their minds!

Those cosy, quiet days between Christmas and New Year are when many people decide what they’ll do differently. If they haven’t heard from you by then, someone else may already have their booking. The strongest January campaigns start well before January and build gradually. They also have a plan for the moment motivation starts to wobble mid-month.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of attempting to be everywhere at once. Posting on every platform daily can create the illusion of productivity, but it often leads to early-year burnout. Instead of spreading yourself too thin across too many channels, identify a few key places your audience spends time and maintain a steady, consistent presence to drive much better engagement.

4. Split Your Budget Into Three Pots

When small businesses talk about a marketing budget, they usually mean ad money. But some of the best value comes from what you spend after someone has booked, not before.

Here’s a quick example. Say you spend £300 and gain 10 new clients, so each one costs you £30. If three of them stay for a year at £40/month, together they bring in £1,440. If everyone drops off after a month, you’ve barely covered your spend!

To build a successful January budget, balance your capital and time across three vital pillars: creating content, broadening your reach, and retaining existing clients. Maintaining this balance is critical, as campaigns often falter when investment is overly concentrated on steep launch-week discounts. Heavy price cuts primarily attract short-term bargain hunters, while genuine long-term client relationships are built through thoughtful onboarding and consistent care from day one.
