Your business website is probably already indexed by the major search engines and you know this simply because you show up on the results page when you search for your business name or primary keywords.  However that index listing is based on the search engine software ‘crawling’ your site and following links from page to page.  This relies on the site being regularly crawled and any links to new content being picked up and added to the index.

Indexing New Content

One of the things that businesses are doing more and more nowadays is to add regular content to their websites. This new content may not be indexed straight away by the search engines and therefore an XML sitemap can help to provide up to date information in a more timely manner.  A study by Google revealed a while ago that XML sitemaps help fresh content get indexed quicker and in today’s environment of content marketing strategies it makes perfect sense to use them to get your content noticed quicker through organic search.

Google state that

“Using a sitemap doesn’t guarantee that all the items in your sitemap will be crawled and indexed, as Google processes rely on complex algorithms to schedule crawling. However, in most cases, your site will benefit from having a sitemap, and you’ll never be penalised for having one.”

Its really easy to generate your own Sitemap.  Try it out for yourself at www.xml-sitemaps.com.  Once you have created your sitemap for free you will need to upload it to your webserver.  Once it is there you can submit it to the search engines via Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster.
